If you prefer closer to the water, there are plenty of boat tours available. They offer exciting adventures across the reef. You can either go on a high-speed ocean rafting trip around the Whitsunday Islands or enjoy a relaxed sailing trip on a luxury yacht. 4. Fraser Island (K'gari, including Lake McKenzie)
Fraser Island, also called K’gari, is a great place for nature lovers and adventure seekers as it offers a range of exciting things to do. One of the island’s most famous spots is Lake Mckenzie, a beautiful lake with crystal-clear water and soft, white silica sand. The water is so pure that it feels like you’re swimming in a natural pool. Beyond Lake McKenzie, Fraser Island has plenty of things to do. You can drive along 75 Mile Beach, where you might spot wild dingoes or explore the historic S.S. Maheno shipwreck. Out of the things to do in Queensland, this is one of the scenic.
The island is also a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, and it offers opportunities to see dolphins, turtles, and even migrating humpback whales during certain months. During my visit, one of the highlights for me was just relaxing at Streets Beach, Australia’s only made-made, inner-city beach. If your plan is to visit on the weekend, you can explore the Collective markets, where you find unique art, tasty treats, and live music. Overall, whether you want to enjoy the sights or collect memories, this spot has it all.
6. Australia Zoo
Australia Zoo is full of fun things to do. Start by visiting the Crocoseum, where you watch an exciting Wildlife Warriors show featuring crocodiles, snakes, and birds of prey. This show honors Steve Irwin and is a must-see when you’re at the zoo. You can also get close to animals like kangaroos, koalas, and wombats. You can feed kangaroos in Roo Heaven or hold a koala in the Koala Walkthrough. It’s a special way to learn about animals while having fun. Another great part that I liked about the zoo is the African Savannah exhibit, where you’ll see big animals like rhinos, giraffes, and zebras, just like they would be in the wild. When you visit, don’t forget to go to Bindi’s Island. The island is known for lemurs and colorful birds, and even you can climb a big treehouse for a great view of the zoo. If you want to make your visit extra special, you can book a chance to meet animals like tigers or even a Komodo dragon.
7. Cairns Lagoon
Cairns Lagoon is a must-visit place for anyone looking to relax and enjoy the tropical vibes of North Queensland. This large, free swimming area offers a safe place to enjoy saltwater swimming without worrying about stingers or crocodiles. The lagoon is surrounded by plenty of grassy areas where you can lay back and soak up the sun or have a peaceful picnic with friends and family. The beautiful views of the Coral Sea make Cairns a great place to relax.
The Lagoon is also a great starting point for exploring the Cairns Esplanade, which is full of activities and attractions. You can simply walk along the waterfront, try some delicious food from local vendors, or just sit and enjoy the scenic beauty around you. The Esplanade also offers playgrounds for kids, fitness equipment for those who want to stay active, and plenty of sports to watch. 8. Skyrail Rainforest to Kuranda (and Train Ride to Kuranda)
Kuranda is located in the center of Tropical North Queensland. It’s a place full of mind-blowing landscapes and unique culture. If you’re looking for things to do at this spot, start with the Skyrain Rainforest Cableway, where you’ll glide above the lush rainforest. It will give you views like no other of the Barron Gorge and Barron Falls. Once you arrive in Kuranda, take time to explore the village which is filled with shops, art galleries, and cafes.
Here, the famous Kuranda Markets are a must-see, where you can discover local crafts, jewelry, and souvenirs. After that, you should proceed on the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway for a relaxing ride back through the rainforest. The train crosses bridges and goes through tunnels. Along with soaking up the beauty of waterfalls, you can learn about the history of this railway, which was built over 100 years ago. So, whether you’re into nature, love shopping, or learning history, Kuranda offers something special for everyone. This is one of the things to do in Queensland that you cannot miss out.
9. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is a wonderful place to see Australia’s amazing animals up close. You can even hold a koala and get your picture taken with it. There’s a special area where you can feed kangaroos and take selfies with them. What I liked during my trip was the variety of animals. Here, you’ll get to see Tasmanian devils, colorful lorikeets, and a huge saltwater crocodile. One of the best parts is feeding the lorikeets. They’ll come right up your hand.
If you want more adventure, you can try the tree top challenge or ride the mini train that takes you around the park. Be sure to watch the animal shows, like the WildSkies bird show, where birds of prey fly right above you. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is more than just a zoo. It’s a place where you can really enjoy and learn about Australia’s wildlife and nature.
10. Noosa National Park (including Hastings Street)
Noosa National Park is a great place for nature lovers and those who love doing adventure. The park has some amazing trails that wind through green forests and offer spectacular views of the coastline. One of the highlights is the Noosa Heads Coastal Walk, which is well-loved for its incredible ocean views. It gives the chance to see wildlife like koalas and dolphins as well. Be sure to visit the Noosa Fairy Pools and Hell’s Gate, where you can enjoy the rugged coast and capture some nice photos (if you’re a photoholic).
Hastings Street is an area nearby with a lot to offer. It’s full of shops, cafes, and restaurants where you can enjoy a meal or buy souvenirs. After spending time exploring the park, Hastings Street is a perfect place to relax and find something delicious to eat. Whether you want to explore nature or enjoy some local treats, Noosa has something special for everyone.
11. Daintree Rainforest (and Daintree National Park)
The Daintree Rainforest and Daintree National Park are full of exciting activities. When you visit, make sure to explore Mossman Gorge, where you can walk along paths that go through old, green forests, you can also join the Ngadiku Dreamtime Walks, guided by the local Kuku Yalanji, to learn about their culture and stories. Whether you’re looking to relax, have an adventure, or enjoy cultural experiences, the Daintree has something for everyone.
If you want to enjoy the beauty of the Daintree, the Cape Tribulation area is a must-see. You can have a picnic at spots like Jindalba, Dubuji, and Kulki, where you’ll find picnic tables and toilets. The nearby coastal waters, part of the Great Barrier Reef, are great for boating and fishing.
12. Airlie Beach Lagoon
Airlie Beach Lagoon is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the tropical atmosphere. If you’re confused about what you can do here, start your day with a refreshing swim in the big 4,300sqm lagoon, where the water is ideal to swim and best for cooling off under the warm sun. Grassy areas and shady spots surround the whole lagoon. Families will love the safe environment, complete with a toddler’s wading pool and lifeguards on duty throughout the day. If you want to have a fun and easy day, the lagoon offers BBQ facilities as well. Out of the things to do in Queensland this is a must.
After swimming, you can take a walk along the boardwalk to explore more of Airlie Beach. The town has cafes, restaurants, and shops just a short walk away. You should even go on a Segway tour or find a good book at the Beach Book Boutique. If you want to treat yourself, there are spas nearby where you can get a relaxing massage or beauty treatment. After pampering yourself, head back to the lagoon to watch a stunning sunset. It is something that one should never miss at any cost.
13. Hartley's Crocodile Adventures
Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures is a fun place in northern Australia where you can see crocodiles and other never-saw animals up close. The park has long boardwalks that take you through beautiful, tropical areas. There you can spot colorful birds and playful wallabies. But, the highlight is definitely the crocodiles. Watching them sunbathe and swim is an incredible experience. The Lagoon Boat Cruise will give you an even closer view, and observing these massive reptiles in the natural, tropical surroundings is unforgettable.
Apart from that, there are lots of other things to do at Hartley’s too. You can learn about different reptiles, insects, and even cassowaries, which are special birds found in Australia. The park is great for families, but kids need to be with an adult all the time. It’s a fun and educational place to visit, whether you live nearby or are just visiting.

Mooloolaba Beach in Queensland offers a range of fun activities for everyone. 16. Castle Hill (Townsville)
Castle Hill in Townsville is a must-visit for panoramic views and outdoor activities. It stands 261 meters above sea level. This iconic pink granite monolith offers several lookout points where you can enjoy breathtaking 360-degree views of Townsville City, The Strand, and the surrounding areas. Whether you choose to hike up one of the well-maintained trails or drive to the top, the scenery is well worth the effort. Once at the summit, you can explore the short walking tracks, relax in the seating area, and watch incredible views.
In addition to the views, Castle Hill is a popular destination for fitness enthusiasts. There are many walking and jogging trails that give you a good workout with beautiful views along the way. If you prefer something more relaxing, you can bring a picnic and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere at one of the best scenic places in Queensland.
17. Cape Hillsborough National Park
Cape Hillsborough National Park is a place that offers plenty of outdoor activities with beautiful coastal views. Begin your trip with an early morning walk along the beach, where you’ll see kangaroos hopping along the shoreline as the sun rises. The park has several walking trails, each offering breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounding area. For a peaceful escape, hike to one of the quiet beaches or explore the different habitats that make this park unique.
Do you like picnicking? If yes, visit the day-use area where you can relax and have a meal surrounded by nature. There are electric barbecues, picnic tables, and toilets for your convenience. You’ll likely see some wildlife like Australian brushturkeys and wallabies while enjoying your meal. If you’re into fishing or boating, the nearby Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is a great spot. Just remember to follow local rules and be careful of stingers and other marine hazards.

18. Paronella Park
Visiting Paronella Park, a place full of history and nature, is truly special. It was built by a man named Jose Paronella in 1935. The park has a beautiful castle, lots of green rainforest, and peaceful waterfalls. On your trip, you can start with a tour called “The Dream Continues” to learn about Jose’s amazing story and see cool things like the hydroelectric plant and tropical gardens. You’ll also see a lot of species of birds and butterflies in this park.
After the tour, you can walk along the paths in the park and see different trees, flowers, and ferns. You can either have a picnic in the park’s lovely surroundings or eat something tasty at the Cafe on the Deck. If you stay until the evening, you can join the “Darkness Falls” tour, where the park is lit up with magical lights, making it a visit you’ll always remember.
Special Place: Don’t forget to visit Jose’ Cottage near the park entrance. Inside, you’ll find a museum with stories from the past. You can see the original projector that played films on the hall walls and look through Jose and Margarita’s family album for a personal view of their lives.
19. Undara Volcanic National Park
One of the coolest things about Undara Volcanic National Park is the lava tubes. Here, you can see the inside part of the amazing volcanic tunnels that formed the landscape. If you like hiking, there are several trails to explore. The Kalkani Crater Rim Walk is a 2.5km loop with great views of the lava plains and volcanic vents, plus signs that explain the area’s volcanic history. Those people who want a small hike must visit this place, one of the best things to do in Queensland.
For a longer hike, you can try the 12km Rosella Plains Lookout Trail. It has awesome views of the volcanic scenery and passes interesting spots like a replica settler’s hut and colorful plants. Bird lovers can see different birds as well, especially in the morning. Here, you might even see bats flying out of the lava tubes at dusk, which makes this place even more interesting.
20. Lady Elliot Island
When you visit Lady Elliot Island, you will find it to be an ideal spot for snorkeling and diving. The place is well-known for its crystal-clear waters and full of colorful marine life. Whether you’re new to snorkeling or an experienced diver, there are plenty of places to explore the coral reefs. You can swim with turtles, manta rays, and a lot of fish. For those who prefer a more guided experience, the island offers glass-bottom boat tours and guided snorkel safaris. These tours allow you to enjoy the underwater views while learning about the marine life.
But, the fun doesn’t stop underwater on Lady Elliot Island. During the low tide, you can go reef walking in the lagoon’s shallow waters, where you’ll discover marine creatures like sea cucumbers, starfish, and crabs. Guided reef walks are available to help you learn more about the reef’s ecosystem and the importance of protecting this fragile environment.

21. Josephine Falls
Josephine Falls is a beautiful place to enjoy nature. A short, easy walk from the car park takes you through a tropical rainforest to some viewing decks where you can see the lovely waterfalls. The Josephine Falls track is just a 1.2km round trip and has great spots for photos and views. There’s also a wheelchair-accessible platform at the top, but be sure to avoid the restricted areas near the falls for safety.
For those who like a challenge, the Bartle Frere trail starts at Josephine Falls. This trail is tough and includes the steep Broken Nose section, which is a 10km round trip and takes about 8 hours to finish. If you’re ready for a longer adventure, the full Bartle Frere trail is 15km one way and goes to the Atherton Tablelands.
22. Hervey Bay
Hervey Bay is a fun place with lots of things to do. One of the best activities is whale watching because the bay is known for its amazing humpback whale migrations. You can join a tour to see these huge whales up close, especially from July to November when they are around the most. If you want to see more nature, take a day trip to Fraser Island (K’gari). This island has beautiful beaches, clear lakes, and green rainforests, making it a great adventure spot.
For a more relaxing time, try a sunset cruise in the Great Sandy Marine Park. This trip gives you amazing views and a chance to see local wildlife. Hervey Bay also has lovely beaches and parks where you can enjoy a calm day. Whether you like wildlife, outdoor fun, or just taking in the scenery, Hervey Bay has something for you.
23. Noosa Everglades
The Noosa Everglades, also known as “the River of Mirrors,” is a hidden gem in Queensland. The place offers a calm and unique experience. This area is one of only two Everglade systems in the whole world. A popular way to explore the Noosa Everglades is by kayaking. As you paddle through the quiet rivers, you can go at your own speed and enjoy the beauty around you. You’ll see lots of animals, especially birds, and over 1,300 kinds of plants. The water is very still, and there are no crocodiles, which makes it a safe spot to enjoy nature. Out of the things to do in Queensland this is a must visit.
If you want to spend more time there, you can camp overnight at places like Boreen Point or Elanda Point. You can take a guided kayak tour if you need some help, or you can explore by yourself. Swimming in the clear water or just floating under the trees is a really relaxing thing to do at this place. After that, you’ll be definitely amazed. The Noosa Everglades is a must-see for people who enjoy nature and want to experience a quiet and untouched part of Australia.
24. Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World
Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World is a wonderful place to enjoy nature and get close to some amazing birds. You can simply walk through the beautiful gardens filled with colorful flowers, waterfalls, and views of the Glass House Mountains. The gardens have over 6 kilometers of paths where you can explore roses, orchids, and other plants. It’s a perfect place to relax, and you might even see peacocks wandering around.
For a more interactive experience, you must visit Bird World, where you can meet friendly macaws cockatoos, and other birds that love to perch on your shoulders. If you’re going with a kid, they’ll love the petting zoo, where they can see a miniature pony, alpacas, and other cute animals. Once explored, don’t miss out on the delicious Devonshire tea in one of the garden gazebos, or bring a picnic to share in this calm setting.
25. Springbrook National Park
Springbrook National Park is a nature lover’s paradise. There are plenty of activities to enjoy. When you go there, start by exploring its scenic walking tracks, which range from short 300-meter strolls to the 54-kilometer Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk. When I did, the trails took me through lush rainforest, and beautiful waterfalls, and offered breathtaking views of the surrounding areas. If you want a unique experience, personally, I would recommend you to join a guided night tour to see the glow worms at the Natural Bridge section. There the cave comes alive with tiny bioluminescent creatures, which will definitely amaze you.
Or, if you’re planning a day out, the park also has several picnic areas. They’re ideal for relaxing with loved ones. Gwongorella and The Settlement picnic areas are popular spots, offering sheltered tables and toilets. Additionally, Springbrook’s diverse wildlife, including rare birds and colorful frogs, makes it an excellent place for wildlife enthusiasts.
